Issue:
I can see my DVR when I am on the same network but cannot see it when I am off of that network. Why is that?
Solution:
The reason why you cannot see it off of the network is that the firewall of your router is not letting outside traffic in.
The fix is to open up the (Virtual) ports of your router.
- Locate the local IP address of the DVR
- With a PC that is connected to the same network open up your web browser
- Go to portforward.com
- On the left side under Routers select Port Forwarding Guides.
- Select the Maker of your router (Cisco, Linksys, Netgear …)
- An advertisement will open up. Close this window
- Then Select the model of your Router
- In the third paragraph, there is a link that says Default Guides. Click on that link
- Follow the instructions on how to open the ports for your router.
- The ports that need to be open will depend on the model number of your recorder.
- If the DVR is an E, SP or XDH you need to open the following Ports: 8016, 10019, 8200 and 12088 (12088 only if using Internet Explorer) If there are more than one unit at the site then the port numbers for the second one and thereafter need to be unique.
- If it is an XDI you will need to open the following Ports: 8016 and 12088 (12088 only if using Internet Explorer).
- Central Point recorder, open ports: 9350 and 80
- If it is an INEX then open the following Ports: 11001-11004. There is no web port/service for INEX
Check to make sure the ports are open by going to canyouseeme.org.
With DSL customers if these steps do not open your ports then call your Internet Service Provider (Very common with DSL that AT&T blocks ports).
